Search Engine Optimisation is perhaps one of the most talked-about yet least understood things today. Any brand or company thinking about building an online presence will certainly come across the term ‘SEO’ in the first few minutes of research.
So what is SEO? In a nutshell, it’s everything you do to organically improve your page’s position in the rankings in the algorithm’s search results.
How does Search Engine Optimisation work?
Page ranking positions are determined by search engines on the basis of three factors: Relevance, quality, and authority. There are a few techniques that help you optimise your content in a way that search engines deem it as such.
So what are these search engine optimisation techniques? Let’s break it down:
On-page SEO
On-page is simply that which is visible to your users. While search engines read your source code, on-page SEO techniques include any changes that are made in the source code but which are also visible to a user. This means that you are required to optimise your code without compromising the info available to your readers.
Off-page SEO
On-page SEO basically tells engines how to match pages to queries. But how do they rank pages that all match the same query? Here’s where off-page techniques come into play. Off-page SEO, like the name suggests, includes any changes or optimisation techniques used outside your site to improve rankings.
An example of such a technique is backlinks that lead back to your site. High-quality backlinks get you a higher position in rankings.
Technical SEO
Our last category includes any techniques that don’t fall in the first two categories. Usually related to the code side of things. Getting something small like your site speed optimised can basically mean a significant boost in your rankings. So why wouldn’t you do it?
